Washington, D.C. – Jan. 30, 2007 – The Washington Capitals and NetStar-1, Inc., an information technology solutions provider to government and industry, announced that they will pay tribute to U.S. soldiers wounded in Iraq though a “Salute to the Troops.” NetStar-1’s Salute to the Troops includes honoring soldiers at each of the Caps’ remaining home games at Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.
Before each of the games, four soldiers currently recovering at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and their families will have dinner at Verizon Center’s Acela Club. The guests will view the games from premium seats and will be introduced to the fans and thanked for their courageous service. Banners inside the arena will also promote the Salute to the Troops program, while NetStar-1 managers serve as hosts to the visiting families for the evening.
“The Capitals organization and its players have been involved in several programs in recent years that recognize the sacrifices made by the men and women who serve our country,” Washington Capitals majority owner Ted Leonsis said. “This partnership with NetStar-1 will allow us to continue our ongoing commitment to honor our soldiers and their families.”
The highlight of Salute to the Troops will be the “Salute to Military Night” on February 8. More than 8,000 service members in uniform will attend the game between the Caps and the Los Angeles Kings. NetStar-1 will be a major sponsor for the evening’s events, which will include a ceremony for local service members who have lost their lives in Iraq and messages from troops abroad that will be broadcast on the arena’s telescreen.
“We developed this program after several of our employees were deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan,” said Bill Strang, NetStar-1’s CEO. “Our Salute to the Troops with the Caps is an exciting and fun way to thank our soldiers for their service and let them know we appreciate the great sacrifices they have made. Most of us will never be able to fully appreciate the dangers and hardships they have faced.”
The Salute to the Troops program sponsored by NetStar-1 continues the company’s efforts to support community-focused events. The fast-growing company of 500 employees also teamed up with the Washington Nationals during the 2006 baseball season and hosted approximately 100 veterans and their families for games at RFK Stadium.
Walter Reed Army Medical Center is located in Washington, D.C. The hospital has treated approximately 5,400 patients from Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. More than 1,750 have been battle casualties.
The Washington Capitals are part of the National Hockey League, www.washingtoncaps.com.
